Consultation on proposed implementation of an integrated resource unit for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND)

What is being proposed

We plan to apply to the Department for Education to establish a SEND unit at Samuel Barlow Primary Academy starting in September 2026. This will involve using and improving currently unused space in the academy to address an identified need.

Why this change is needed

The proposal is to create a SEND unit within our academy, in line with local and national government strategies. The unit would provide 24 additional places for pupils with SEND who have an education, health and care (EHC) plan and are placed by the Integrated Children’s Disability Service at Nottinghamshire County Council. This will help meet the growing demand for SEND places in the Nottinghamshire area. The SEND unit will be located in a currently unused part of the academy building.

Impact on pupils and the community

There is expected to be no negative impact on our academy, our pupils, the environment or the local community. Our usual academy operations and day-to-day life for our children will continue as normal.

Based on the local authority’s population projections and analysis of provision needs, other similar local providers are not anticipated to be affected, and the placement of children within this unit would continue to be based on parental preference.
